Archaeological Field Survey Training
Learn with MAHSA
Welcome to our training materials hub! Here you can access tutorials and resources that are free to access to help you develop skills in Field Survey, GIS & digital heritage documentation. Whether you are a complete beginner or experienced professional, our training caters to a wide range of knowledge levels.
Our training tutorials provide a structured, step by step approach for planning and conducting field survey using MAHSA methodology. It is designed to guide users through the full process—from understanding survey principles and preparing legacy data in QGIS, to collecting standardised data in the field using digital tools, and finally integrating and analyzing that data for research and heritage management in QGIS.
The materials follow the real sequence of work in the field. At the same time they are designed to be used both sequentially and independently. Users begin by building a conceptual foundation, then move into planning survey areas using existing data (analogue and/or digital), before learning how to collect and manage data using digital tools. The final stages focus on integrating and analysing this data to produce meaningful spatial insights.
Each section combines practical skills with applied examples, allowing users to develop the knowledge needed to plan, execute, and interpret field surveys in a consistent, and efficient way. Whether you are preparing for fieldwork, working on-site, or processing results, this training offers the tools and knowledge needed to support each stage of the workflow.
